Your car’s engine cranks and turns over when you turn the key in the ignition. But it takes a lot more work than you may imagine getting it to start. It needs air to flow into the engine, and the only way to do that is to create suction (the motor does this when it turns over). There won’t be any air if your motor isn’t turning over. Without air, fuel cannot burn. The starter motor is in charge of starting the engine during ignition and permitting the rest of the process.
